[Politics] The McCain Campaign
This is politics, not of a particularly mean sort, but you know how it goes.
When I look at the McCain campaign, I'm constantly saddened by what could of been. Not that I really would of liked to have seen a terrific one, because I disagree with his policies and think that Obama will take us in the right direction, but because this was the last chance of a man who I deeply disagreed with on most issues but thought was a good guy who deserved better.
In some ways, I feel he's been sold out by the people he trusted to help run his campaign. His ads are nasty (not the nastiest I've seen, but pretty bad), his VP nom is accusing Obama of, if not actually being a terrorist, or at least hanging around (and tacitly condoning) terrorists and their actions. He nominated someone whose views are deeply antagonistic and, well, if Obama or Biden had been tied to the people she is, then there'd be a media bloodbath.
What I'm saying, I suppose, is that McCain is making big mistakes. Plus, even if I allow myself the luxury (feeling that I do that we will win this time) of feeling bad for the man, this is still the person who hired people who smeared him in a campaign directed by his own political party. A person who, if he doesn't believe what his campaign is spewing, has gone against his own convictions to win. He is a man who, at the zero hour, has sold his soul for personal gain. That may be a tradgedy, but even so, that is not the decision making that I want located in the White House - a place of political paradox where doing whatever it takes to make it in is not what I actually want.
Granted, it's not a great year for Republicans, and outside of a terrific candidate (which the Republicans just don't have) I do not want to support them at all. They've made a mess out of things, and I want them to be punished for that for a long time. But, and this is a big deal, I think that millions of Americans are waiting for a return of the party they believed in. There was a time when I thought they were wrong (and I think this has played out), but not stupid or evil. I think a good campaign, a good running mate, and good policies would have made this much close, if not a narrow win for McCain. Now, he's not out yet, but Obama is going to win, and I'm casting my vote for him. I think others should, too.
