I was scheduled to go to a movie marathon grad student get together which got cancelled literally at the last minute, so I'm just at home chilling. Since movies were cancelled, I think maybe it's appropriate to watch at least one today - Kay wanted to watch The Iron Giant, which I actually haven't seen before, but I'm kind of feeling something a little more mature. (Not that The Iron Giant is a bad choice, I'm sure.)

Since the 1st, I've actually gotten to see two movies I haven't watched before - Intersteller (terrible, IMO) and Ex Machina (good, but troubling in many ways) and I've written a little about them in my notes but I could still stand to write a little more. There's not enough there for anyone to be interested in, but we'll see. The notes I intend to write as apart of my resolution are intentionally left without criteria - I just want to make sure I'm thinking critically about what I'm watching and reading. If it ends up being interesting, you'll probably hear about it.

I finished reading Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of Hope late last night (which is midnight, because I turn in early these days) and I haven't written all that much about it. I think it didn't tell me anything I hadn't already guessed on paper about pedagogy, since much modern pedagogy in higher education in the humanities is heavily based on Freire's work at least in part. I still considered Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Pedagogy of Hop important reading, though, since it caused me to reflect on practice and instilled a sense of purpose and commitment in my work. He also clairifies certain elements of his work in the way that one does when one writes academically, you know? So, yeah, I'm glad I read Freire.

I didn't get as much reading done over break as I'd like. I'm stuck right before the last dungeon of Xenosaga: Ep. 1 and I'm doing that thing you do before the last boss segment - stocking up on items, buying the best normal equipment, doing a little bit of the end-game "secret" content. Episode 1 isn't a very good game, but it's clearly the end result of twenty years of JRPG development at the time - a dead end, really, but one that still has adherants in some development circles. (Final Fantasy continues to develop games in this line, though we may see a major divergence in the re-release of Final Fantasy 7, of all things.)

I tried to juggle Fallout and Xenosaga, which didn't work out all that well. I'm still likely to try, though, since I'm almost done with one and I want to restart my Fallout playthrough with a post-apoc Hunter S. Thompson - Fear and Loathing in the Commonwealth style, if you get me. Several characters seem like they'd be well-suited for companions in this mode, though Paladin Danse really doesn't.

Huge segments of my reading are going to be thesis related this semester so, you know, wish me luck!

My sister hated that too. I was warned off by the reactions.

Really, I think this style of game would be better if they had better editing and story flow. I liked the Xenosaga universe, but I never finished the game.

Also, did you get the giant combiner robot summon? ^^

Intersteller is a movie with good technical effects and a lot of totally wasted potential - it's a rough first draft, not a finished product. But, at nearly three hours, that's not good enough. I wouldn't have minded if it was somehow only 30 minutes, but a three hour movie better be good.

Episode 1 could manage to be okay with better gameplay or by just having better music, and better writing in the cutscenes - I can't even tell if the voice acting was good or bad because with dialogue like that, there's very little you can do.

I didn't bother to get the robot summon, even though I was tempted for a moment - I typically don't mind just playing out the battles and it feels very much like a shortcut. Like, I don't have a problem with people using it! I just didn't feel like it would add to my experience with the game.

It really didn't help that it sold itself as hard SF.

One thing I noticed about the cutscenes- They were 'Someone speaks, pause, next person speaks.' Ala dialog boxes, but spoken, rather than the kind of dialog flow you get in TV or movies.

Yea, it was kinda that ^^ Though considering it was one-shot-per-battle and precluded using other abilities, in any fight where it didn't win things, I think it was a disadvantage.
