Spring break has broken, and I'm really enjoying this working vacation kind of setup. It took a stupid amount of time to download, sort, and rename my student's essays. I'm teaching composition, and so I've explained that I'm holding them accountable to a certain level of attention to detail. Normally, I don't care so long as I'm able to get the grading done, but I really feel that if you're only concerned about the practicality of a class like composition or literature, you're looking for skills and practices you'll be able to take directly from a class and apply to your life. One of those things is the broad ability to pay attention to requirements and compose your writing according to the standards and practices of the organization you're apart of. In this case, composing emails properly, correctly formatting the essay and works cited, and labelling your file according to instructions I've gone over many times (as well as writing up a best practices document for them) is part of that.

You probably wouldn't be surprised to hear how many students got it wrong. I'm grading for that and, in a lot of cases, it'll be the difference between a good grade and a mediocre one, and in even more cases, the difference between a mediocre grade and a miserable one. C'est la vive, no?

Daily regimen of reading's pretty rigorous. One or two essays from Lin, Abney, and Bekey's Robot Ethics, clearing some of Lord Byron's poems off the agenda ("Beppo" and "Manfred," I think.), notes on Keats ("Hyperion" and "To Autumn" I think are my last two before I move on. I'm a little behind.), and I'm re-reading the essays from Gibson's Distrust that Particular Flavor, because they seem to correllate almost one to one with what I'm writing on at the moment. I've purchased two trade paperbacks from Black Quantum Futurism incoming, though I really don't know when they'll be here.

I took two half-days to relax. I was working, yeah, but not at the same output level. I'm hoping to actually take the upcoming weekend completely off from work of any kind except, maybe, fiction and essay reading that I'm personally, recreationally interested in. I think that if I put in a good, solid week of hard work now, I can really let myself enjoy a day or so of nothing but chilling. (Though I might make it Friday-Saturday rather than Saturday-Sunday if I get home late from the game on Thursday.)
