I'll do this sometimes. I've got a MySpace, which exists for the specific purpose of talking to two friends, one of whom has an extensive MySpace site but never actually posts anything. One of the most amusing things to me is the sheer number of spam Friends invites I recieve on my account which I know are false, considering that account really doesn't 'get out' much. I post to it fairly frequently, but it's a particularly niche topic and I never posted any pictures besides my adopted icon there.
So, I'm befuddled that anyone would be fooled by these invites. I assume they're the same caliber of person who recieve a note in their email and get excited because someone from Zimbabwe is going to be wiring them a lot of money.
What I've been amused about for the last several days are peoples handles online. I'm a user who just missed the really wild days of the settling of the internet, but I've been on long enough to know a time when your handle said a lot about you. Now, my current handle is really kind of a doozy, because there's a certain amount of chutzpah to referring to yourself as a god of death, but Thanatos02 has been my internet name for a pretty long time. The current LJ is only used because I can't* get access to my old one, and it's not like someone else has it, so I just named this one after my Cam Mage character.
Still, there's something kind of understated and classy about Thanatos. I'm proud of that name. I do wonder, though, the mental connection some people feel towards their names, and if they feel they've really got the chops to own it. I mean, my hacking skills are pretty nonexistant and there was a time that'd discount me from any kind of bitch'n handle, but I think as an online entity I can justify a cool name. I feel confident** that it's a connection enough to me IRL, and that I'm slick or potent or whatever enough to own it. And there are other Thanatos' out there, so when I see them I wonder what kind of people they are.
What kind of person is DeathAngle88, and do they want to be an angle, or did the mean angel?
Actually, I don't want to judge, but when I see someone's handle, I wonder how well thought that handle really is. And when I started, I was really thinking about being scathing in regards to people's lame handles, but I've discovered that as the internet has become more widespread and it's increasingly easy to find information about people in real life in connection with their internet persona, that despite the risks, people are using their real names more and more. Alter-egos are more heavily tied in with who people are in their day to day then I remember in years.
And then I remember recently googling myself and my screenname, and you can probably guess which one is more prolific. My handle is much more representative of who I am then my actual name, though I do know that there are some totally lame pictures of me as a kid on the internet under my name.
* Way too lazy.
** Yeah, imagine that.
