The other thing is that I said I'd be going to Archon this year, and that I'd walk, if I needed to. Well, you know, I know that's not going to be the issue at hand here, because it's expensive to fly back, but I think I can swing it. I'll need to see if I can take Monday and Friday as sick days, or something (and I may not, because I'll either still be in training or just finishing up, and attendance is something I'm serious about at work), and if not, then I'll just be in the area for a short while. One of the things I'd want to do is stop by and talk with my parents, and arrange some stuff to come back up to Seattle with me. It'd be one of those scenerios where I come down to the area with nothing, and come up with three new bags, so it's more then just a convention excursion.
Though Archon is a good excuse.
I didn't go last year. It was a big sci-fi con, and I haven't really been a dedicated reader of sci-fi in maybe a decade. Isaac Asimov was one of my big childhood heros for writing the Foundation and Robot novels and for his extensive catalog of instructive scientific work, but while I never really stopped enjoying sci-fi, it stopped being a cornerstone of my literary life. So when I heard that my party con had been replaced by another convention that was considerably pricier, I just didn't bother. This year, Archon is back, but it's still expensive, and without an agenda, I don't always have an amazing time.
I've mostly been going for the atmosphere for a little while now. It kind of feels like a holiday, because there's hundreds of people dressed up as something, and more that arn't, and they're milling around, playing game, watching movies and anime, and generally geeking out for several days straight. Beer's free (and kind of tastes free, but, well), which follows, because it's hard to drink your admission fee anyhow. But, you know, I'd probably be there for Saturday, which still ties with Friday for big days, and if I can get Monday off, I'd probably spend Sunday with the folks and head out early Monday morning. This is something that I'm pretty serious about if I can manage it, so one way or the other, I'll make it happen.
