I didn't expect to do real well. My record for games was 1 and 2, but the 2 were very close. A play mistake lost me one game, but I was probably going to lose it anyhow. My deck would still require tweaking, if it was going to continue to get played, but there's a good chance it won't continue to operate in the form it's in. After tomorrow, I'm apt to scrap it.
I still had a good time, though. It's a kick to play people's creations with your own, and mine was absolutely a lot rougher in design then most other peoples. I won two packs (my record was technically 6-4, which put me square in the middle) and opened up some good stuff. i bought a few more since I was feeling good about my luck, and cracked a 25 dollar rare that I was actually buying from that set in hopes of getting.
M10 pre-release tomorrow, and I'm going. Updates likely to come on Sunday, edited on to this page.
EDIT for Saturday: (below the cut, because it becomes long)
Annnd, M10 release. It went smoothly, but it also went a little long. There were a metric ton of people there, and it's one of the minor venues even. One of the previous tourny organizers had passed away a little while ago, and he was a good friend to the community here, so the release was held in his honor, with his parents showing up. Elements from Brian's collection were distributed amoung some of the winners, and I have it on good authority that this will continue over a period of time, per the wishes of his family based on what the community meant to Brian. It's a kind guesture and I hope that the recipiants appreciate it. It is a weird thing, and I am thinking about it, not in terms of this specific incident but, well, maybe I'll post something in the future.
I opened my cards for the sealed deck and won the first two matches, then preceeded to lose the next four. Some were clear mistakes that I should have succeeded, and others were flukes/bomb draws. The nature of the rules change means that combat tricks are out, to some extend, and the nature of the games felt way different then previous sets I'd played in - more generic fantasy - but it was good, and fun, and making the mistakes I made clearly indicates a continued level of strategy that needs to be maintained to win.
I keep making some mistakes that tell me that I need to think more clearly when playing. This is sealed, so I didn't lose in the draft, but I could have put together a more reliable deck and I could have played better. I default to autopilot, so no wonder I lose. Anyhow, good times. Went out later to hang out with friends, and that was a great time. I stayed up late, but in retrospect, it wasn't too much to worry about. I got about an hour less sleep then usual, and considering I tend to sleep too long anyhow, nothing of importance was lost. For a small time, I was worried. I had just hit that cusp of 'am I getting too drunk?' and stopped right there, which was the right call. The enthusiastic crowd made me boisterous, but there is no need to become belligerent and trashed amoung friends.
