Man alive! It's actually pretty busy tonight, with one hospital call after another. I'm not really sure what's going around out there this Thursday, but if it's not sickness, these calls indicate injury. Remember- if it happens to be zombie bites and plague, aim for the brain and run, don't fight - don't risk a bite!

Today's running kind of demonstrated to me what a timer I'm on when it comes to doing stuff while I'm on the rotation. Dinner and hanging out was hella relaxing, but after taking off after 6:30, I really only had time for taking coffee and some light sorting. Admittedly, I go to Borders and walk about, then sit around sipping and reading art and writing magazines which typically kills an hour, but it's full days like this where I really feel the difference between 8 hours and 10. I'm sure the rats are not totally pleased with me that I've put off cleaning their cage another day. >_>

Tonight's kind of a misc recap, because lots of little things are happening as opposed to any one particular thing that's gripped my brain. First, I finished all of Kafka by the Shore. I had kind of read a little bit at work before, but didn't really dedicate my night to polishing it off until yesterday morning after midnight when I made a kind of final, mad sprint to the end. I mentioned his unique, kind of blase voice earlier, I think, but that's not all that makes his writings interesting to me. Even though each one of his books is clearly written to stand alone, they possess the same themes each time. A critic I read while taking notes for my senior papers mentioned that while Murakami is a fairly prolific writer, almost all of his protagonists are basically the same. I'm not sure if that's really true, as he tends to have multiple protagonists per story, with varying degrees of self-agency, but what I might say instead is that all the stories could be subject to the same metaphysical principles. Even though most books start off, if surreal, fairly normally, so far each one has managed to dip into the supernatural to some degree.

This supernatural element seems to resonate with similar features from book to book. Cats, being lost, shadows, losing unnamed but critical pieces of onesself, a lack of personal agency. I chatted with Brent about really enjoying the stories but made a joking complaint that they wern't very gameable. The more I think about it though, the more Changeling seems to fill the same rough themes, even if the characters seem more like fetches sometimes.

Not that I'm proposing to game this setting straight, though I figure I could, but instead that part of the feel could be maintained. I think Changeling is a really interesting setting, and the more I think of the gamelines, the more I feel that the themes in each one really have the potential to resonate strongly in a game. I'd really like to take a crack at it sometime, but I'm kind of dubious if I'll really get a decent chance, or if I'd be as good as I wanted to be. Anyhow, libraries show up all the time in those stories too, and I'm always compelled to seek one out after I read one. Seeing a pile of really excellent books also does something to the collecting part of my brain, where suddenly I want to rush out and line my shelves with books from my favorite authors. Just compulsive, I guess.

In any case, I was sure I had done a fairly admirable job of filling my two days off, Friday and Saturday. Talking with  [profile] writer_lynn just made sure that I wouldn't be wanting for activity in any case, while  [profile] duc_de_duras reminded her that while I might be up at 6 AM on work nights, I also go to bed at 8, rendering my early-morning appearance on Saturday possible, but embarressingly doze-filled on my part. =D Still, Friday and Saturday are noteworthy because stuff gets priced for the Cam yardsale which I'm able to attend now. (because of shedule changes, again) I'm not precisely sure that this is exactly a fun and games event, but at least I'll be able to bring what I mean to bring earlier.

Since I'm always willing to give away things I don't use anymore, and there's a yardsale coming up, I started going through my things to find stuff I wasn't really using when I camed to a surprising realization. I just don't own that much crap. Except for books, cds and dvds, games, and the remnants of various CCG collections (still considerable to the casual gamer), I don't have much of value or even a lot that isn't valueable.** Even my game systems and television arn't that new. I expect the two most expensive things I have are my coat and my laptop, and I'm pretty sure those have both been used to the point that they're not worth money anymore. I guess I'm just going to look harder for things to donate, if I donate much at all.

The upside is that if I leave when I expect I am, I'm willing to lend out things like consoles, games, or books. I think some peeps already asked to borrow the majority of my gaming collection, but it's not like that particular collection was anything special anyhow. The library of books only becomes extensive when all of us commie gaming bastards combine, ala some nerdy proletariot Captain Planet.

*Unless you count my few posed action figures and my stacks of mostly-filled notebooks.

On a totally different side note, my wrists have been acting really oddly lately. They don't hurt, but they're prone to popping and feel really stiff.  I'm wondering if there's something about the keyboard angle and desk/chair height that's doing something to them.
