On my list of things to do, along with grad school application stuff, fiction, gaming writing, and whatever, I challenged myself to write 10 poems of varying styles. I really haven't written poetry in pretty much forever. The list of stuff I haven't written in a long time is awfully long, so you come to it and you realize that, yes, of course, you're extremely rusty.

I'm pretty hot and cold on poetry. I have some strong feelings about word choice that seems really irrational, for example, and reading poems always seems really disembodied to me. Like, here are some words on a piece of paper. It's less than a page, usually. There's something about that which reminds me a lot of a painting, actually. Or, you know, closer to a painting than it is to a novel.

Anyway.

Cutting limes for gin,
I prick my finger on the knife.
A drop lands on the glass.

Making Gin & Tonics,
I think of you and lose track.
And start again.
