I haven't really been giving myself new shit to do lately, since I don't really want to feel overwhelmed with miscellanious personal goals before I start classwork. I've got a week to wrap up whatever before pedagogy class starts which is a straight week of full-day workshops after which I probably will just give myself nothing but 'vacation' time before teaching/writing workshop/grad classwork/thesis work starts. Kay's got some time off before Fall semester, too, but might have to leave for a week for potential job training. If that comes through, we'll really only know right before it happens. We're both going to be incredibly busy again, but there are still a few things kind of up in the air. (Which seems like the default state.)

I finished up Borderlands 2. It's kind of what I'd consider to be a mechanics-first game, where the interaction with the mechanics and player skill really are the reasons for its existance and, as such, it's well put together. There's nothing particularly impressive about the plot, but it's serviceable enough to give you a fairly good 'reason for playing'. I've heard people say that they've played it over and over again and, considering how many hours I've put into the Civilization francise (I won't tell you - that's how much), I can understand the impulse. Its strongly constructed, repetitive state could be deeply appealing to some people, and the variety in the mechanics of play seem to vary sufficiently to create the sense of replay value. I know I'll probably never play it again, but I've sunk an incredible amount of time into Star Wars Battlefront in the past, so I could be wrong. I know I'm not coughing it up to give to my brother, though, so I'll probably keep the title. I don't really think there's anything else to say about that, probably. I've heard some big fans of the series talk about the depth of characterization of the primary villain, but they're wrong, and I feel that's about where it stops.

I've got some short writing to wrap up, I'm hoping to play and beat Fatal Frame 2 in the interim, and I'm planning on reading Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed in the meantime. I'm also planning on finishing the play and writeup of the WoD game over the course of the week. I'm hoping it'll be a good month.
