I was lagging real fucking hard on sending in my prospectus draft - something that's a formality in my situation, and something that's likewise been grinding my gears, because nothing really winds me up like Serious Work that also isn't particularly important. I spend as much time on it as I do a final essay, but I also know that there's not a lot of point in it - cognitive dissonance is worse than any responsibility. Top it off with the fact my committee chair doesn't actually respond to my emails for weeks, sometimes. I recently found out that she's actively spent more time on a colleague's thesis than mine - while she's my chair and she's not even a reader for my colleague. (Bonus points: said colleague actually doesn't want the professor's input. Whoops!)
Like, I'm not really angry or anything - but I am a little frustrated. I selected my board based on who I thought would push me and actively offer critique, and based on who I expected had relevant knowledge. Turns out the knowledge was somewhat... misrepresented or misunderstoof, and as for input - basically none. Meetings have been okay, but it's mostly me talking and being told that I'm doing my work well. So, I don't know what I'm supposed to expect. Who knows! Communication in the department seems to have broken down and there's a lot of tension in the air, because funding's being cut again and my professors are all super, super busy. (Which certainly factors into the above, yeah?)
But! I did do the thing, and the thing is done, so I'm sitting back with a little Kraken rum. I put together a Magic deck - I tend to build them with a slant towards control, and my designs are pretty irritating to play against. I mean, I actively enjoy running U/W old-school CounterPost, Control, Draw-Go, and Stasis. I like disruption, old school Sligh and Necropotence, and build land destruction. This is a creature based B/G deck, and it's not particularly well-tuned or sophisticated. There's as much library/draw manipulation as I could manage without really focusing on a theme besides sick beats. It's got Berserk, Necropotence, Rancor, and Spirit Monger in it, so it doesn't have to be particularly sophisticated. There's some limited graveyard recursion and utility creatures that serve to wreck artifacts, creatures, and lands - but only enough for edge cases to keep the other player off balance long enough. It's a duel, 1v1 kind of deck that doesn't have a lot of staying power in multiplayer, but I just don't have the depth in my personal card stock to build many decks.
I might actually take the whole day off from thinking about academics at all tomorrow, and let myself recharge for working non-stop this weekend again.
