For me, there's a frustration when I can't live up to expectations I set for myself, regardless of whether I really know if they're reasonable - but things keep moving along. I don't know if I'm happy with my work yet. I'm not done, and it's still way too close to me to see it clearly. I've been depressed and stressed lately, so I've been trying to build enthusiasm for what I can kind of direct my attention to after the thesis is complete. Based on a challenge my friend set up for herself, I'm going to try to achieve 34 things by the time I'm 34 after I turn 33 at the end of this month.
This is one of those things I could totally add my thesis and completing my Master's to - but I'm also totally not! This is really about kind of... starting a next stage kind of thing. "So, you've accomplished a major life goal, what's next?" I tend to suffer from depression pretty badly in the winter, so this seems to me to be a way of avoiding the worst of the doldrums by staying busy.
I don't have a full list, but here's some stuff I'm planning on doing in the next year:
0: Setting up a list online where I can write about this. This is meta. It don't count. But... it's related.
1: Make beer - never done this before, and it seems rad. I've also seen other peeps totally do this just fine, so, exciting.
2: Brew mead - this doesn't actually seem that hard, and I could use naturally occuring yeast, but it's going to be cold and that'd make it too sweet. There's a supply place pretty close, and I'll probably opt for a much drier Champagne yeast for a dry, higher ABV mead.
3: Infuse my own liquors - this is even easier, but I want to play with flavors. Some of these are supposed to be easier anyhow. I once did this with vodka and Skittles kind of and it worked out okay. I think I could do better.
4: Submit something for publication - I'm not too picky about this, I just want to get used to it. Find something accepting submissions and do it. Technically I've already done this, but it wasn't very good. I want a re-do.
5: Write a book length non-fiction work - I've got something in mind.
6: Cook a five course dinner (minimum, maybe 7 courses for bonus points) for a dinner party of friends.
7: Maybe make my own bitters?
8: Design and layout a CD case for a fan mix.
I had some other stuff, but I've forgotten some of it. It's pretty heavy on stuff I can do without much money, but it's hard to get away from price tags entirely, so some options might open up as money becomes more available. I'll keep adding stuff as it makes sense.
