I've got work tonight, and my schedule lately has been pretty odd, which is a hiccup that goes all the way back to sometime early two weeks ago when I worked four nights in a row instead of three. Because of how the other night worker managed her time, and because of a no-call, no-show, I eventually ended up getting four days off instead of my usual three to make up for it, plus a bonus day which I have no idea where it came from, but I didn't need to show up last night according to the boss, and that's typically good enough for me.
Because I'm not expected to make that up, I get what looks a lot like a vacation. Five days off, one day one, and another three days off as I hit a regular schedule again.
Truth be told, I haven't really used my time wisely as much as I've been running about the local area. I helped a friend get moved in, and spent a lot of time in Edwardsville sitting on their new couch or sitting in a bar talking about politics. In one case, I ended up sitting in what I could only call a two-story shack, brought over by a friend, where I basically just fell asleep. In any case, when I'm off work, I try to limit my time on the computer somewhat, because I rely a bit on backlogs to catch up on as part of my time spent at work. This means you can probably expect another entry fairly soon (tonight or tomorrow) on stuff I picked up while I was off, or just stuff that's been on my mind.
Like many other people, I had gone to see Iron Man, and I had enjoyed it. I enjoyed a lot of the subtle and overt character flaws of Tony Stark, and everyone I talk to agrees that Robert Downey Jr. was the right person to cast for obvious reasons. I was seriously considering reviewing it here, but blogger Lisa Kansas over on PunkAssBlog.com already did. I mention it because the writer does something I frequently do when I read or find myself at the movies, which is that I inevitably end up having a mental fight between the part of my brain that just enjoys stuff that explodes or flies, or something and the part of my brain that can't help but point out a cliche, something sexist, racist, ect.
One of the things that comes up as a major issue is the medias depiction of the military. The military is a popular, well, I almost want to say 'bogyman' among some groups because of its strong patriarchal bias, and because it's basically the wing of our government we pay to go around soldiering. Anyhow, Tomgram has an article on why media is typically going to portray the military wings in a good light anytime we see a lot of their stuff in our movies.
Normally, I don't give number ratings to films, so I'll just say that I enjoyed Iron Man, and it was worth watching. I think some of the sexism in the film is mostly the latent sexism you'll find in almost any media piece today, while the really obvious stuff stems from the fact that Tony Stark, among his many other flaws, is also really sexist, and that translates into misogyny. I don't think that's much more telling then his alcoholism, but when misogyny is your hot-button issue, it does kind of stand out.
But the pacing was really excellent. I never really wished it would hurry up, and it spaced out its character development and pure actions scenes just right.

I'm glad they're remaking the Hulk movie, though. I really disliked the first one.
