This is just your weekly Weston reminding you that I don't just have one or two characters written up waiting to go, but that I literally have a file folder on my computer simply titled RPG Dossiers. One of my arbitrary fun-time goals is to have a character written up of every different Exalt type for 2.5, and I'm branching out into Pathfinder, Vampire, and Mage.

I am a nerd.

Has anyone got any role-playing stories lately? Like, is anyone gaming? How's it going? I haven't been playing all that much lately, (but I've got some gaming stuff coming up in the generally near future), and there are people here I just haven't talked to in way too long about anything, much less gaming.

I have a hunch I'm not gonna get a lot of bites on this because I don't get a huge amount of comments, but I know some of you actually do read this, so I'm interested in what you're up to. Rambling or ranting is acceptable, if that's what you got.

Nickle Tour Part 1

So OK I'm playing in a celtic setting game in the 3.5 D&D system. The PC is a Neutral Hexblade. First time in a very long time I've played a female character.

The society is very superstitious and largely anti-magic. The PC is from a family where the grandmother and aunt are both known witches with the grandmother being the local midwife.

So the PC is extremely loyal towards those friends she has and relies upon them for her views of right and wrong. The rest of the group is fairly good aligned with my PC being the neutral of 'These are my friends and I'll do what ever it takes to make sure they are safe'. She's extremely good looking and unconsciously charismatic but socially awkward. The story as I see see it one where she's slowly coming into her own and recognizing herself for the power she is becoming and the woman that she has the potential to be. A lot of her views right now are shaped by her outcast social status but as her power grows there will be issues of both fear and desire from her society to deal with. Not to mention that I'm building into a story of religious identity which will make for some interesting twists and turns.

There you go that's the nickle tour.

Nickle Tour Part II

I'm running an Eberron game (also 3.5) that I've titled "Veins of Prophesy the Role of III" which is of course a double entendre because what campaign title isn't a double entendre?

Right so the campaign is set with the group idea being Brelish loyalists that are connected to the head of the captain of the guard in Sharn. He needs to bring in some outside people so that he can conduct an unofficial investigation. Within a short order the party becomes aware that Sharn has been subjected to a series of magically caused micro-earthquakes that are growing in magnitude. The party is assigned to recover an artifact that was 'loaned' to a Brelish hero that can reveal the source of these earthquakes so that they can put an end to them!

Along the way there's the prince of a fallen kingdom who needs their help to save whats left of his people, a series of all too cunning hobgoblins that trick the party into doing their dirty work, a series of primitive Warforged who are attacking their allies and causing all sorts of problems!

Our plucky heroes are as follows:

Luck - Lucious ir'Taen the changling child of a military trainer and a father he's never known. Luck's life has been tormented by a series of unfortunate encounters with the Thranes who have committed any number of atrocities against him including murdering his dog. A military spy who is a master of the urban landscape he served in the last war with distinction (Urban Ranger).

Vonn - The decadent elven rogue with a taste for wine. He doesn't steal just anything it has to be of dramatic purpose. From a family of successful wine merchants who fled their homeland almost a hundred years ago. Sharn is his families home and he will do anything to preserve it.

Uwether - The reluctant celebrity Warforged archer. In a chance encounter Uwether saved the life of an important Brelish senator and became the hero the newspapers wanted to talk about. He's shy and reserved but the reporters don't care. Often credited with the work of others Uwether is constantly hiding from the spotlight.

Abe - The prodigy artificer and ex-noble. His families lands were lost when Droam made independence from Breland formal. Always hopeful that the Hags will fall or that the rest of his family will be recovered as all but his mother disappeared in their made flight from Droam as the Hag's Ogres took the noble land. Briefly turning to banditry out of frustration he was to face execution were it not for his mother's plea to their noble connections. Instead Abe went into the military where he proved his usefulness on and off the battlefield.

Re: Nickle Tour Part 1

Ah, you're running and playing a game at the moment. That sounds fun! I guess this is the game that Stephanie is running - how many people are playing?

And, I know that you run in some pretty open/accepting circles, so it's probably not all that odd for someone to be playing a character of a different sex/gender than they are, but do you get any weird feedback from playing a female character? I noticed some pretty interesting (from a social dynamic perspective) results when I played one at my last Exalted campaign.

Re: Nickle Tour Part II

I've always been pretty interested in seeing how you run games. I've seen you play in several, and I admired how consistently in character you guys were, as well as the depth of the characterization.

How long have you been running this one for? It sounds pretty sharp.

Re: Nickle Tour Part 1

Four players in total, you know Eric Berman but I don't think you know the others. We're playing via google hangout.

I have had mixed reactions. Early on one of the other players male/male character hit on my PC. He had to change the relationship because he had a hard time RPing out that dynamic to one that was more brotherly. But really that's alright with me the two PC would of made horrid romantic interests. In my experience girls have an easier time gender bending than guys do. Societal norms hit them differently. Though I often wonder why I don't see more gender bending in RP.

Re: Nickle Tour Part II

Thank you.

I started the game in September and we're playing twice a month. But given that we're holding it at a gaming shop the sessions are short. Which creates some interesting timing issues trying to leave the game in a place that's both easy to pick back up and not in the middle of combat.

It's possible that next fall I'll be running a play by web cam game and you're actually already on my short list of invites. I think the web cam style games can work and the last couple of months playing in Stephanie's game has been an exercise in getting the kinks worked out in that process.

Next Fall's long enough away that anything could happen with my schedule, but let me know. What kind of game were you thinking of?

You know, the only problem I've ever had with your posts is your lack of commas. But, fuck it. I know your issue, you're bad fucking ass when it comes to text posts. You might be the most ballin' fucking badass I've ever met, reading text posts like this. I'm never going to mention again, but I really appreciate it. You deserve all your Superman shit, with the capital S.

Lesse, I'm running Ankoquest (a play-by-post game set in the Naruto universe). I just finished a big arc with a revenge-obsessed clan called Chigaya reaching beyond their means and striking after Konoha. During which one of her teammates Sasuke was head-strong, acted on the edge of orders, and pulling dangerous stunts. So they're dealing with him on that.

Also at the end of the arc, some of the Chigaya ran into third-party territory, where they followed and met their rival! Who, despite having only met for one conversation and like five minutes, they've already expressed a desire to kick her in the face, so I think things worked well :)

Role-playing games

I spent 50 hours writing the game you'll be playing on Saturday, for what it's worth.

From: [identity profile] atolnon.livejournal.com

Yeah, I think I see stuff about that on your LJ from time to time. Are you using any kind of mechanics or is it pure writing?

From: [identity profile] q99.livejournal.com

Purely writing, following the mechanics of the universe in question.

From: [identity profile] atolnon.livejournal.com

See, that's something Kay does that I haven't done in a really long time! When I was a lot younger, I roleplayed with a few people (and nagarerutenshi is the only one I'm still really ever in contact with at all, and somewhat sporadically to boot.) for Serial Experiments Lain.

It was good times! There was stuff about it that would probably frustrate me today, but the lack of mechanics also also a little freeing.

As I get older, I get more and more interested in both ends of the games I play, but kind of separately, like two different hobbies that are pasted together. Anyway, it sounds interesting! I'm just musing a little, don't mind me. = )

From: [identity profile] q99.livejournal.com

It helps that I have a really well-defined idea of what the characters can and can't do and how the series combat works.

And I'm fairly poor at coming up with characters (I can do some, but not in quantity and in a coherent manner without a lot of forethought), but I'm pretty good at using existing characters I think, so using an existing universe helps me a lot. And it sometimes puts me in positions where I don't know how the plot is going to go- my own characters I generally am able to figure major reactions in advance, but using an existing one I find I have to react more ^^

From: [identity profile] atolnon.livejournal.com

I can understand that. Do you talk pretty extensively with the players before playing about character abilities and limitations? I've seen other people play, and they seem to intuitively know, but there are some occasional cockups, too.

Personally, I really like putting together new characters and ones who are inspired by other media, too. (I'm building some Exalted characters right now who are inspired by Cowboy Bebop, and a bunch of others that are really just David Bowie alter-egos.) Kay, on the other hand, doesn't get into making new characters at all, and tends to just re-purpose existing ones. It's worked out just fine for us, though, even in paper and pencil rpgs.

From: [identity profile] writer-lynn.livejournal.com

Well let's see... You already know a lot about the game that I'm running since I write about it on here, but this has made me realize that I'm way behind writing about it.

Running via Google Hangout has been interesting and challenging, but as Mark said above, we've been working out the kinks. I will say that I hate running only once a month, but time for everyone is at a premium and time for me to prepare the quality level that I like to run as well.

From: [identity profile] q99.livejournal.com

It's a combination of telling them and them being familiar with the base material (and then telling them some more, because some people have loose interpretations). If someone wants to do something that's just way off, I pause and explain things (other times, if someone wants to do something that's way off, it's just player greed ^^ 'You have time to do one of two things, but not both' 'Let's do both, and maybe a third thing too!').

I repurpose characters from other things to fill out NPC slots. The players have yet to figure out their neighbor 'Maku' is based on Big Macintosh from My Little Pony ^^

I spend a fair amount of time on my major ones like villains and rivals, though.
