Yesterday was very temperate. Today has cooled, and it's raining. Bad weather to be stuck outside.

We've got two foster cats indoors, and we've named them Garrett and Leandra from the Dragon Age franchise. True to their name, one is the mother of the other, but they're both quite young. We took them indoors in October, when it looked like the weather was going to rapidly cool off. It didn't, quite, but since then they've gotten their shots, been de-wormed, etc. They're getting fixed next week. They're beautiful cats, especially Garrett, and so friendly. We're trying to foster them to someone nearby that we can absolutely trust, but it's been difficult to find someone. It's tough to keep them; we can't really afford it and we don't really have the space, but we don't like the alternative and so we've decided to put up with it for the meantime. I'm trying to convince my father to take them in.

There's another cat outside, and she had three kittens. We really didn't realize that she was hanging around until after we took Garrett and Leandra in. Although we can't be completely sure, it seems very likely that she's Leandra's sister. We couldn't take them in but we're soft-hearted, so we leave food out for them, and we've been looking for no-kill shelters that have space. That hasn't been easy, either.  We've had very little luck until recently, when an acquaintance decided she might have an in with a shelter in Missouri. She tried to get them before Thanksgiving, but we were only able to get the mother and two kittens, which would have left a third, very small kitten to elements we can't see her surviving in. We opted to try again on the 29th - incidentally, my birthday. (Happy 32nd, eh?)

On Wednesday, the 25th, I figured I'd be getting some work done in no particular hurry to deal with the world at all. At 9:30, I was still in house pajamas and an old sweater when a noise outside panicked Garrett and Leandra, causing them to flee into our bedroom. Whatever scared the cats like that seemed worth paying attention to, at least, so I checked out doors to find two tremendously large dogs on our porch, snuffling around. One was a Shepard mix and the other looked to be a Boxer - as far as I could tell, anyhow. The kinds of dogs someone in the suburbs really doesn't need. They were each probably heavier than I was. They were friendly to me, but my blood really ran cold, because people who have dogs like that usually don't train them well. We've got porch cats. I desperately hoped that the kittens were all hidden under the porch like they usually are.

Two were, the mother was. One wasn't. The little kitten made a break for it. The dogs treed the kitten, but she lost her grip before either I or Kay could make it in time. I was running in bare feet, and was just... you know, too slow. Not strong enough to keep both dogs off. We stopped it from getting messy, for what it's worth. Or, messier, anyhow. The kitten is buried in the backyard.

It's cold and raining outside, and we're afraid dogs will return, so I lured the cats indoors with soft food. This time, one mother cat and two kittens is sufficient. We'll have them bundled up for adoption on my birthday, but we're just unwilling to take chances. They're sleeping soundly in the living room. The third kitten was so pretty.

I still have to finish my 102 syllabus by the 1st and my annotated bibliography for the 30th. I'm so distraught. Thanksgiving was very difficult for us.
